    What is Eggdrop?

"Eggdrop is the world's most popular Open Source IRC bot, designed for flexibility and ease of use, and is freely distributable under the GNU General Public License (GPL). "

In this tutorial you will only learn how to setup/install and configure your Eggdrop on a shell of ShellHosting.

When you login into a ShellHosting Shell Account, You will see a list of commands telling you to install different things one of them is "setup-eggdrop"
This commands runs the installation process for you and you don’t need to download Eggdrop separately compile it configure it and than make it for you.

Following are the steps you need to run a Eggdrop.

  • First of all you need to type setup-eggdrop command in command prompt of shell.

    [user@rising /home/user]$ setup-eggdrop
  • (this will compile the eggdrop)

  • Now It will ask about some important information required.

  • 1) Eggdrop's Nickname: (you can type any nick you want to be used by eggdrop bot on IRC)

    2) Eggdrop's Alternative Nickname: (the nick to be used when the real nickname is already in use)

    4) Eggdrop's Port: (the telnet port it should open to listen for connections or dcc connections)

    5) Eggdrop's vhosts: (the vhost of the eggdrop bot)

    6) IP address of the vhosts: (the IP of the vhost you can get it by "/dns IP" on mIRC)

    7) Your nickname: (the nick of the bot owner, would be used later on when the bot is on IRC)

    8) Main Channel of the bot (Type Name Only): (type name only means channel name without # sign)

    9) IRC Network where the bot will join : choose number(1=IRCnet, 2=Undernet,3=DALnet): (chose one number to connect to the specific network accordingly)

  • All above values are REQUIRED for the eggdrop bot in order to connect it to IRC.

After pressing Enter it will tell you that your eggdrop running is under the specified port you can also check if your eggdrop is running or not by the command in shell "ps x" if you see a process running named ./eggdrop than your eggdrop is running else you have to edit the config file which would be named as the eggdrop-nickname.conf in the eggdrop folder. To edit the config file you need to go to the eggdrop directory with the command "cd eggdrop " and than edit the eggdrop-nickname.conf file by "pico eggdrop-nickname.conf" or "ee eggdrop-nickname.conf". Change the errots which you see when you run the eggdrop and it fails, save the file and exit, if you are editing with pico command type control + x to exit and save. and if you are editing with ee command you need to press "ESC" and than "A" and again "A" to save and exit and execute this command ./eggdrop eggdrop-nickname.conf in the shell once you are done with editing the eggdrop-nickname.conf file. it will tell you that your eggdrop is running with the configuration in the config file.
